Termites Work 24 Hours a Day!

Subterranean Termites cause more then 2 Billion dollars of damage annually.  They live in underground colonies working 24 hours a day.  Infestations can spread for months before they can be detected.

Why are termites so hard to control?
Termites have been around for millions of years because they are good at what they do.  They are efficient workers.  Each termite has a specific task and when a colony is disrupted some termites have the unique ability to adapt to fill the need.

Termite colonies are made up of caste members.

  • Typically a king and queen
  • Nymphs like teenagers growing up can become whatever is needed by the colony
  • Psudergates (workers) handle nesting, foraging for food, building & feeding others
  • Soldiers with large mandibles protect the colony
A termite queen can lay several thousand eggs a year and has been known to reproduce for up to 25 years.  A mature colony may contain over a 1,000,000 termites.  They are amazingly efficient creatures.

How big is a colony?  A Colony can be a couple feet, two (2) houses, a block or throughout an entire neighborhood.  There can be several colonies associated with just one home.  While one tunnel is visible more may lie underground.  Eliminate one colony and insect behavior indicates Nymphs or queens might start another nearby.

They can live behind walls, underground, seem virtually invisible and are unpredictable.  Termite treatment is not an exact science since each homes conditions and infestation are different, Inspection is the key.

Signs of Termites:
  • Swarming during the day and especially after a rainfall.
  • Transparent wings found in and around windows and door frames.
  • Small mud tunnels commonly found along foundation walls, decks and porches.
  • Swarm insects look similar to flies but are longer and wings are narrower.
What now?

  • Finding termites or mud tunnels can be difficult for the untrained eye.
  • Tunnels maybe found under the house through the crawl space.
  • Mud tunnels are built from surrounding soil & wood materials giving termites protection from the elements.  They blend in with the background making them difficult to spot.
  • They come up from underneath the slab and build tunnels along the interior of your garage.
  • Conducive conditions may include drips, faulty plumbing, gutter leaks against structure.
